For me, I'm more of a new experiences guy. Everytime I use a new DAW I think it is the best one as of yet. I started out with Fruity Loops, which has really great plugins and a straightforward layout. Then I moved on to Cubase, since I felt like the tracks that came out of that sounded way better (I know, this is bullshit, but it just felt that way). Currently I am using Ableton, which for me works the best. I could never really get tracks done in the other DAWs but in Ableton everything works just so fast. It is all right there in your screen: your timeline, your effects, your mixer.

I finished a lot of tracks in one day (with some additional tuning couple of days later ofcourse). Just make a track in the demo versions of all DAWs you can think of and pick one that suits your needs best. I agree there is no best. But I started with Pro Tools years ago. Recently bought FL because I wanted to do more midi/vst based stuff and I didn't have a current license for Pro Tools so needed something. I spent a few months getting very familiar with FL and it's unique ways of working.

I recently decided to start incorporating live instruments and got very frustrated with the way FL handles audio recording. So I downloaded Reaper and spend a few weeks learning and watching tutorials and have been very frustrated with the midi editor in Reaper. Neither is perfect but I have found myself just using FL now simply because of familiarity. I don't have much free time to work on music and I find with Reaper sometimes I still need to spend half my time figuring out how to do something or what workflow is where as even with FL's limitations I know how to work, how to work around stuff and I spend 95% of my time being creative with FL.
