Why run a local server? Why let ISPs cap your bandwidth? Use Google's cloud-based Compute Engine to buy as much computing power as you need, when you need it, and for only as long as you need it. In this course, author Joseph Lowery shows how Compute Engine fits within the Google framework, and steps through project development in Compute Engine with two languages (JavaScript and Python), demonstrating how Google's virtual machines are managed programmatically. He also shows you how to coordinate resources and perform mission-critical tasks like load balancing. Instructor •.

Skills covered in this course • • • Course Transcript - As noted in the previous chapter, access to Compute Engine is handled through a variety of methods. One of the most flexible and powerful is the command-line tools and to use those, you'll need to install the Google Cloud SDK.
In this lesson, I'll show you how to do that on the Mac. Compute Engine doesn't currently have a separate SDK.
The Google Cloud SDK covers Compute Engine, as well as that service's siblings: App Engine, Cloud Storage, BigQuery, Cloud SQL, and a relatively new addition, Cloud DNS. To get the SDK, go to cloud.google.com/sdk Now, scroll down a bit so we can get to the Installation and Quick Start section. The only requirement for running Google Cloud SDK is Python 2.7 or higher, which you'll have if you are working with Mac OS 10.8 or later. There are a number of methods for installing the SDK but by far the easiest is to use the Terminal command line. So I'm going to copy that provided code that you see here.
And then, go to a Terminal and paste it in. Once I • Practice while you learn with exercise files.
