I wish to connect a external monitor to my 2012, 13 inch MacBook Pro. I believe it is the last model with a CD drive. It does not have retina display. I was wondering if I can connect the external monitor using a series of wires and adapters I have or can buy for cheap using USB to DVI. The main concern is, does/will the USB port send out video to the DVI monitor? I know I can buy a Lightning Port to DVI adapter and use a DVI cord to do the job, but the adapter is more costly than solution I wish to use.
Either way I connect the second monitor, will the sound come out of my MacBook or the speakers built into the monitor I have using DVI? The monitor I have is a Hanns-G.
AROTaO USB C to DVI Cable (6FT), USB C to DVI (24+1)(4K@30Hz), Type C to DVI Adapter, Thunderbolt 3 Compatible for MacBook,MacBook Pro,ChromeBook Pixel,Dell XPS 13/15, iPad Pro 2018,Mac Mini 2018 etc.
The Mac does not put out a display of any description over USB. I do not know what components you have, but a simple conversion is not nearly enough to get a picture. USB is about two orders of magnitude too slow for a display. You can buy the specific adapter I mentioned above (except that is on back-order for at least 21 days) and install its substantial software to get a screen to work, but the mouse-tracking is very slow. Everyone else needs to use that Apple DVI adapter or a high-quality equivalent. Apple Footer • This site contains user submitted content, comments and opinions and is for informational purposes only.
