Last night I went to swap pickups out on my son's G-400.. I bought him one with the large pickguard, so I figured I would just desolder, pop off the pickguard and put in the new pups.. Unlike the Gibsons, the flange of the post bushing overlaps the pickguard, so that you cant remove the pickguard without removing the bushing!!!.. I tried screwing in a tailpiece stud and pulling it out, but no budgie.. My son is either stuck with the Epi pups, or I need to find a way to remove the bushings without destroying the guitar Any advice? Here's a shot: the fuzzies you see around the edge of the bushing are residuals from the plastic protective covering that was removed. The flange of the TP bushing (same size) is a little elevated above the wood, but you can compare and see that the full thickness of the bridge bushing's flange is above the pickguard.

I tried working the pickguard thinking that maybe the holes were just cut really tight, but it wouldn't budge, and then I thought.. This is an Epi..

Their manufacturing tolerances can't possibly be that exact! Unless you can fit the pulling-shoe (my wording) under the bridge anchor of the Stew-Mac tool, it may be better off for control knobs where there is enough room for the tool's 'shoe' to get a grip underneath. If I were to pull this anchor stud myself. I would: get a metric hex bolt to fit the anchor thread. Make a 'saddle assembly' to span the metric bolt head and create a 'hoop'. That is to be pulled by an automotive bodywork 'slide hammer'.
