Excel This File Is Locked For Editing Mac
Every time I need to open a file I get a warning message that the file is locked for editing (by me. I never did that!) and that I can only open a read-only version. I've tried saving the file under another name, creating a new file and copying over all the information and nothing seems to work.

Office 365 / Excel 2011 for Mac I also have VMWare Fusion 7 w/ Windows 8.1, Office 365 / Excel 2013 for Windows. I have an Excel file that is not open by any other application (Windows or otherwise) and when I try to open it on my Mac, I get the error 'The file is locked for editing' and am given the choice to open as read-only or cancel. When I flip to VMWare Fusion (running on the same Mac), I have no problem opening, editing and closing the same file with Excel on Windows. I have tried opening and closing the Excel File from Windows.
I also shut down my VM Host entirely, but the problem still happens on OS X. A few questions: • what's up with that, and how can I fix? • Can I 'unlock' the Excel File?
• Can I tell whether a file is 'locked' (outside of MS Office), either on Mac or Windows? //EDIT - problem solved. See below for solution.
